FAQ

Why is PAT testing important?
Electrical appliances may start out safe, but can deteriorate over time, posing a risk of electrical shock or fire. PAT testing helps identify potential hazards and ensures compliance with regulations set in place by the UK Health and Safety Executive and insurance companies. While PAT testing is not a legal requirement, failure to comply with regulations can result in fines and imprisonment. Every business, from sole traders to public companies, should have their electrical appliances tested regularly to ensure the safety of employees and customers. PAT testing certificates are increasingly required by insurance companies and provide peace of mind to both employers and employees.

What items need to be PAT Tested?
The items that need to be PAT tested are typically any electrical equipment or appliances that have a plug on them and are intended for use in the workplace or public environment. This can include but is not limited to:

  • Computers and monitors
  • Printers and photocopiers
  • Power tools and machinery
  • Kettles, microwaves, and other kitchen appliances
  • Hairdryers and beauty equipment
  • Audio and visual equipment
  • Extension cables and adapters

How often do items need to be PAT Tested?
PAT testing is an important process to ensure that these items are safe to use and reduce the risk of electrical accidents or fires. It is recommended that they are tested at regular intervals, typically annually, depending on the type of equipment and its usage.
